Zomba Forest Lodge

Zomba Forest Lodge is a colonial cottage nestled into Zomba Mountain. If you want intimacy and a cosy relaxed atmosphere, then here is the perfect destination for you. You are treated like family and friends when staying at the lodge, you are, after all, in the home of the owners. Enjoy time to yourself in the gardens and listen to the sounds of the forest around you, or head up through the mountain on a hike and enjoy sightings of birds, Samango (Blue) monkeys and the gorgeous forest all around you.

Zomba Forest Lodge is off the grid. This means they rely upon the sun and never have power cuts! There are solar lights in the bedrooms, paraffin lamps and candles in the lounge/dining room. They have limited charging capacity with their office solar panel so it’s best if you try to ensure devices are fully charged before arrival.

Why we love Zomba Forest Lodge!

You are greeted by the wonderful Tom and Petal who are incredibly accommodating and friendly. The rooms are so beautifully done and although very simple you get an instant homely feel through the lodge. Relax on the veranda or enjoy the peace and quiet in the garden – a really relaxing little place with some of the most gorgeous views not far from where you are staying.

Switch off and Relax

If you want to get away from the world then Zomba Forest Lodge is the perfect place to unwind and detox from technology. With no access to power, you can totally switch off, relax and enjoy what the gorgeous Zomba Plateau has to offer. Relish in the beautiful gardens or take a hike on one of the many walking trails around the area. There are beautiful picnic spots to enjoy too – with beautiful views overlooking waterfalls.

Homely Stay

With just 4 small rooms (each en-suite) decorated with a true Malawian touch, they are simple but stylish and you feel like you are staying with family at Zomba Forest Lodge. The owners, Petal and Tom are incredibly accommodating and want you to feel right at home. The dining area is small and quaint too and has beautiful touches throughout. In the colder months you can get cosy and warm up by the log fire – the perfect atmosphere with family or loved ones.

Yummy Food

We don’t know what their secret is but the dishes that they create are absolutely superb. Their creations not only sound delicious when reading the menu board but they are full of love and flavour. In fact, they are so delightful that people head up to the lodge just for lunch or dinner. If you aren’t staying here and wish to head up – it is advised to call ahead as they get booked up pretty fast.

    We had a wonderful time. We were a party of 6. The road up the the lodge is bumpy, but worth it. It’s best done in daylight as we found it a bit tricky to find. A delicious lunch awaited us. The lovely Petal our host was really helpful. We loved the location, there are lots of different walks to go on. The ethos of the lodge and the work that Tom and Petal are doing for the community is wonderful.

    Believe every positive word written about this magical little gem in the Zomba forest, and book your stay immediately. Its hosts are warm, friendly and go above and beyond in every possible way; their space is cosy and homely; their surrounding forest and mountain more beautiful and tranquil than you could imagine; and the food – oh the food! – is without comparison. Tom and Petal, thank you. Thank you for such a happy and memorable stay… We loved every moment.

  • Anniversary weekend

    My wife and I visited ZFL for an overnight visit to celebrate our wedding anniversary. Tom and Petal were amazing hosts, making us feel like we were visiting friends. The other guests were a delight to meet. The weekend was relaxing, and a sunday morning walk around part of the plateau was great for seeing views of the southern Malawi countryside. I must mention the food, which was by far the best I have eaten in any establishment in Malawi.
