From the plentiful crocs and hippos on the banks of the river to the large herds of elephants, antelope and newly introduced black rhino, cheetah and lion! Mvuu camp is affordable and has a really great staff from the chefs to the guides, everyone here is highly skilled. Liwonde is not to be missed. Headlining Malawi’s wildlife success stories and only a short drive from the lake or the main cities it should feature on everybody’s itinerary and Mvuu Camp is a really great place to start.

Why we love Mvuu Camp!

Mvuu Camp, much like the lodge, has incredible staff from the guides to the chefs the quality remains of a very high standard despite the cheaper price tag! It is also located on the riverfront so you don’t have to leave your room to start your wildlife sightings!

Lodge Key Features

Activities

Here you can partake in a range of activities such as classic game drives, immerse yourself in the bush on an exciting safari walk, tracking the animals on foot and watch the sun go down on a gentle boating safari. The Safaris on the river is a really great way to spend the day with some excellent birding and the chance to see the animals from a different angle up close. Each activity is an excellent opportunity to see the park’s wildlife up close and personal and with some really great guides, you are sure to see some truly special sightings.

Guiding

The guides here are fantastic, from incredible birding experts to top trackers. Most of them have been based at Mvuu for years and so can tell you the parks incredible history from being on the brink of depletion from poaching to the success story it is today with many species reintroduced and thriving, and even more on the way! Each guide is really friendly but also knowledgeable, like being able to recognise birdcalls and knowing exactly where the cheetah cubs may be hiding. They are some of the best in the industry (recognised with a few awards) and subsequently make the stay here worthwhile.

Food

The food here is made by the same chef as the (higher-end) lodge so you know it’s going to be delicious. They put on some incredible afternoon teas and fresh and delicious meals, it seems the menus are endless despite being in the middle of nowhere. Their head chef, Wayne, is a creative genius and seems to craft gourmet meals from humble ingredients. We really love the selection of food at lunch with tasty quiches, fresh and interesting salads, and solid staples like burgers and lasagne. The 3 course dinners are always delicious and you can be sure you will leave here a little heavier than when you arrived!

Client Reviews

  • Amazing stay so close to the animals!

We spent two nights here at the end of a working trip. Could not recommend it more highly! The staff are lovely and knowledgeable and will do their best to accommodate your wishes for animals/birds etc. Rooms were fabulous, we had a few visits from animals through the night! Food was also excellent.

  • Delivers every time

Back again in Mvuu with a group, this time mid-September and surprise surprise: first time we got grey chilly weather, due to Chiperone winds. Strange feeling. Nevertheless this was again easily the best lodge on our trip, with fantastic wildlife, great chalets and very good food. The speedboat transfers were fantastic in terms of elephants (must have been around 100 on a single drive)

  • Lovely stay

We spent 2 nights at Mvuu Camp as part of a 3 week trip to Malawi. Overall, our stay at Mvuu was exceptional. The quality of the rooms from the beautifully made and decorated beds on arrival to the piping hot shower, to the fantastic views over the river teaming with hippo, crocs and the occasional elephant were second the none. The restaurant was excellent, the food was delicious and a really impressive effort was made to cater for dietary requirements. All the staff we encountered were friendly and helpful and couldn’t have done more for us.
