Mumbo Island

Mumbo Island is about a 40 minute boat ride from the mainland. Let it take you away from modern distractions, mobile phones and normal hectic life. Instead enjoy walks on the white sandy beach, a glass of good wine as the sun sets, crystal clear blue water- where you don’t even need a snorkel mask to see the fish! Take a good book or kayak round the island and simply enjoy the rustic nature of the island and the stunning views.

Why we love Mumbo Island!

‘Mumbo just has the clearest azure water so you can see all the colourful fish. With a rustic island feel I can have no distractions, enjoying the lake for what it is and have a digital detox- much needed for me!’

Lodge Key Features

Clear water and views

If you have ever pictured a private island in your head with white sandy beaches and crystal clear water chances are Mumbo will perfectly fulfil this. The views, simply put, are stunning. The chalets are perched atop a rocky outcrop overlooking the blue lake and you can see the small colourful cichlid fish from your room! Whilst the rooms are rustic with a focus on eco-friendly construction, you have your own Robinson Crusoe style chalet with a comfy bed, en-suite bathroom with bucket shower and long drop loos. All in all the perfect island escape!

Cichlid fish

Mumbo is the spot to snorkel on the lake. With crystal clear water you barely need a mask to see the colourful fish. Lake Malawi is home to over 700 species of endemic Cichlid fish and whilst it may not be the ocean Lake Malawi has a very healthy population of fish which make for a unique snorkelling experience! Take the snorkelling masks to explore the rocky outcrops around the island and in the protected bay to see for yourselves the amazing freshwater fish!

Digital detox

In a roundabout turn of events from lodges originally desperately trying to have internet and signal at them for clients constant need to be online, a new trend has emerged for places you can digitally detox. Get away from beeping phones, endless emails and the monotonous scroll of social media on your island paradise with no signal and no WiFi, in fact there is no electricity! Eat dinner under bright stars and candlelight, watch fish eagles as they swop in to catch fish, kayak round the island looking for otters and spend quality time with your loved ones away from modern distractions.

Client Reviews

  • Wow

This place is seriously dreamy. Stunning setting, lovely climate, wonderful cool clear waters, beautiful rooms with incredible views, excellent service. If you come in the dry season then it won’t be nearly as green as the marketing pictures, but it was beautiful anyway. Waking up to fresh coffee on the stairs to our hut, and little birds visiting our balcony; reading in a hammock overlooking the clear blue waters; having G&Ts made for us on a sunset boat trip – it was one of the best experiences of my life.

  • Superb

Mumbo would be one of our top 3 beach experiences. Basically everything was perfect. The cabins are great, food very tasty the staff and manger excellent. On top of that you are on a stunning island with only 10-15 other guests, the water is great with very good snorkeling. In addition there is abundant bird life and resident otters among others animals.

  • Paradise!

I just completed my second trip to Mumbo Island. (I went for the first time on a solo trip in 2017). I cannot express in words how tranquil, safe, and heavenly this place is. I will say this is a place to literally unplug (no electricity, no wifi, no cell service) and enjoy your liberation from 21st century living. Accommodations are rustic, but comfortable and clean. This is a place where you quickly forget about time and schedules…. it is wonderful ! Activities include kayaking, hiking, snorkeling and enjoying life on a hammock and star gazing. This eco-friendly experience is Swiss Family Robinson combined with Fatasy Island. Do not change a thing.
