Huntingdon House is the epitome of old colonialism in Malawi, from the beautiful backdrop of the tea estates to the manicured lawn with a croquet set up. The formal rose garden and the cosy lounge with bookcases where you can sit with a book in front of the fireplace are highlights. With delicious food and a tea-inspired cocktail menu, it is the perfect place to explore the tea estates. Hike up to the picnic spot, take a guided walk, enjoy a tea tasting (of over 25 teas!) and relax in between more adventurous destinations!
I loved the old-style colonial feel to what once was a beautiful house and is now a stunning boutique guesthouse. The lush green gardens and wild flora and fauna, beautiful tea estates and stunning sunset views make it an all-round very picturesque destination. Our host could not have done more to look after us and the food was exceptional. We loved our guide, especially when I asked for a Savanna for the drive and his response was “No, you will be fine!

Huntingdon House is such a special place, with so much history in its walls and a lovely story to go with it, I felt transported back in time to the colonial era. The beautiful surroundings really took my breath away, I think I took a few hundred pictures within an hour (definitely go and visit the picnic spot – it feels like you’re on top of the world!). The delicious and well-thought-out meals were such a treat (each with a hint of the tea and coffee grown on the grounds – Satemwa coffee Tiramisu…. yum) and I loved the hot water bottle placed in my bed, such a thoughtful touch.

The beautiful house with incredibly comfortable rooms was the perfect place to relax in-between safaris. With an array of delicious tea-infused cocktails, amazing food and stunning grounds it was just like being in central England minus the rain!

Each room in the house is completely unique, with great views of the gardens and the converted chapel which you could get lost in – it’s so big! Each room has the old colonial charm from rose prints to chintz china! The beds are big and so comfortable, the bathrooms even bigger! You can have fun deciphering whether it was granny or grandchild in days gone by who used to occupy the room before you!
The food here is delicious, from huge roast dinners to a hearty burger or a fresh salad, each meal was better than the last. Then, of course, you can taste the tea and coffee made here on a tasting tour, where you can learn about the history of the farm and enjoy over 25 teas! They also offer an excellent array of cakes and sandwiches for their indulgent afternoon tea, served in the gardens. If that isn’t enough they have a variety of tea and coffee-infused cocktails you can enjoy like to ‘Moj-tea-to’ or ‘Marteani’! A pretty great way to enjoy a sundowner!
The main reason you visit Huntingdon House is to see the tea estates. Explore the beautiful fields and the surrounding countryside by foot or mountain bike. Take a picnic and a bottle of wine for a special lunch up one of the surrounding hills; it’s a romantic meal with a view. Alternatively, ask the lodge to arrange a truly unforgettable breakfast. The endless rolling hills of green leaves make for an epic backdrop to the house, it is also a lovely area to stretch your legs. Enjoy gentle rambles in one of the greener parts of the country as you relax in an old colonial piece of heaven.
