Delicious Meals

Kumbali knows how to put on a good spread! The food is delicious and full of flavour. It is a family-run lodge and they are lucky to have a Cordon Bleu chef in the family. Jes, is the daughter of the owners, and with her passion for food and incorporating good service and training the team, you will go home with full bellies and memorable culinary experience.

Get close to the African Fish Eagle

With lots of activities to enjoy at Kumbali, one not to miss is the sunset boat trip where you will find the local residents nestled into the trees on the side of the hill – the African Fish Eagle. Get your cameras ready because these majestic beauties are quick when it comes to feeding time. With their eye on the prize you can watch them swoop down to the water and catch their dinner, they aren’t shy and get close to the boat – it is a pretty spectacular scene.

No contact to the outside world

If you want a few days away with no contact to the outside world then head to Kumbali Lake Retreat. With no signal around the property and no access to Wi-Fi this is somewhere to enjoy a technology detox. Instead get a good book, relax on your own balcony or in one of the hammocks on the beach and enjoy some peace and quiet.

Client Reviews

  • A relaxing weekend — Fantastic Stay

I recently stayed at the Kumbali Lodge Lake retreat, being a frequent customer of the Lilongwe sister hotel. I would like to thank Benedetta, Tanya and Stinger for a truly 5 star experience from start to finish. Our party was fortunate to use the new “honeymoon” style suite; and the chalet directly overlooking the lake. Both were exquisite – with nice views, comfortable bedding and very importantly mosquito nets. For the duration of our stay no request was too small. We ate very well on each occasion and enjoyed the surroundings, hiking and swimming. the Kayaks on site were especially a nice touch.

  • Amazing place! This is a must on Lake Malawi

We stayed two nights at Kumbali Lake Retreat Lodge, and it was far too short a visit. The ‘huts’ have a treehouse vibe, nestled into the side of the hill overlooking stunning views of the lake. Beds were super comfortable, an awesome spot to hang out and watch the monkeys play. The food was superb, with vegetarian options provided. Staff are so helpful and friendly. We were lucky enough to meet the owners as well – wonderful! Am already dreaming of going back.

  • A fantastic stay on the lake!

Kumbali is one of our favourite places to stay on the lake! We stayed here over new years eve and as ever the food, room and location was amazing! Their fish eagle feeding trip is one of the best on the whole lake with the eagles coming in so close! The wildlife around is also great and taking a kayak out to go and find the samango monkeys is one of my favourite things to do in all of Malawi! Kumbali is always a great stay and the staff, location and atmosphere never disappoint!
