Blue Zebra

Blue Zebra Island Lodge is a beautiful piece of paradise about an hour from Lilongwe. Set in Lake Malawi National Park it is a paradise for nature lovers; from the brilliant birdlife to the animals in the lake and the colourful Cichlid fish, which the lodge is named after. Blue Zebra has luxurious tents overlooking the lake, an infinity pool, cocktail bar and some of the best food in Malawi, it is the perfect place to rest and relax at the start or end of your trip!

Why we love Blue Zebra!

Each time I go I am more and more impressed with the food and the service. From Brian on the cocktails to the wonderful chefs, it is the perfect escape from the city. Great for kayaking or relaxing in the pool it is one of my firm favourites.

Where do I even begin? Blue Zebra is delightful! Our visit there was surely one to remember. Welcome was warm and friendly, rooms tastefully designed and thoughtfully decorated, meals delicious and filling with special regard to our dietary requirements. We went on a boat ride and saw the incredibly beautiful golden sunset that Africa is famous for.

Such a gorgeous spot on its own private island! Loved everything about this lodge, the rooms are spacious and comfortable, the hosts friendly and welcoming, the cocktails delicious and refreshing and the fish tacos where a highlight…I would request them for every meal if I could!

Lodge Key Features

Staff

Nothing is too much for the staff at Blue Zebra, from helping you identify the many species of birds and animals on the island- let Adamson guide you round with your checklist to find the resident hornbills or fish eagles-, to arranging your romantic sunset cruise or beach dinner, from the sweet touches of flowers and handwritten notes in your gorgeous rooms to Brian the cocktail shaker who remembers your favourite tipple! Set on a piece of wild paradise the managers will go out of their way to make sure you have the special stay you are after even if it is just a bit of peace and quiet by the pool.

Food

The food here is outstanding; they serve well-thought-out and fresh dishes every mealtime, such as their famous fresh fish tacos. Their breakfast omelettes are truly delicious and offer a range of other hearty steaks, each dish we have tasted here gets better and better! With a critical attention to detail (remember this has to be all imported to the island) there is a huge availability of fresh fruit and veg as well as fresh fish from the lake. They are great at creating menus around dietary requirements, food intolerances and allergies, washing all fruit and veg in boiled water to make sure it is sterilised and making sure you have your own tea time cakes tailored to your needs.

Pool

Not all areas of the lake are crystal clear, however, there is a crystal clear infinity pool here overlooking the lake, right next to the cocktail bar. The pool is the perfect place to unwind, read a book, sip a margarita and cool off from the hot African sun! Whilst you can certainly enjoy kayaking and sunset cruises around the island we would recommend taking the boat further out to a spot perfect for snorkelling (where the water is clearer)! The highlight of this lodge is the beautiful infinity pool, so if you aren’t here to see the fish this is the perfect place to relax and enjoy a ‘beach’ stay without the hassles of ‘beach hair’!

Client Reviews

  • Overwhelmingly beautiful, with the friendliest staff in Africa.

I was here on a family trip and I must say, it was an incredible week. The snorkeling is mesmerising, the water sports so much fun, the food phenomenal and the staff were particularly wonderful. I couldn’t believe how friendly and accommodating every one was. 10/10 recommend this place to all. A great family get away or romantic location. Would be great for a honeymoon as many of the lodges are secluded and private.

  • Wonderful stay at an amazing place.

We stayed at Blue Zebra for two nights and didn’t want to leave! From the moment we arrived we felt completely relaxed and comfortable. The island is beautiful and the nature trails, bird life and set up make it the ultimate place to wind down. The range of activities on offer and variety of places to explore mean you can keep yourself busy if you please. The staff couldn’t be more accommodating and manage to balance both tending to your needs whilst leaving you in privacy perfectly. The accommodation is again a great balance between luxury and being at one with nature.

  • A peaceful, easy, relaxing week

We came to Blue Zebra Island Lodge to chill and relax following 9 days safaris in neighbouring Zambia and it fitted the bill perfectly. We stayed 6 days in one of the luxury tents which was very spacious and comfortable with a fine view from its private decking over a small beach onto the lake. On our arrival we were greeted by the manager Kenny and given refreshing drinks while he ran through a few details; a couple of days later Jen and Duncan returned to the island and took over – we found all three to be so very friendly and helpful, as were all the staff we encountered.
