Day 1Day 1
Day 1: Meet at Blantyre International Airport and drive to the Lujeri Tea Estate nestled at the base of Mulanje Mountain. After a two hour drive we will arrive at the Malawian Style guesthouse in the Tea Estate where staff are on hand to cater for your every need. The guesthouse boasts a swimming pool, beautiful rock pools nearby and incredible views of the Mulanje Mountain, “Malawi’s island in the sky”.
Day 2Day 2
Day 2: After breakfast we head to the starting point for the hike up to Madzeka Chalet, situated on one of the many peaks of Mulanje Mountain. The hike is a slow but challenging 4hr walk with spectacular waterfalls and rock pools along the way. We will stop for lunch and a couple of swims en route and should be at the chalet by around 3pm. Feel free to explore the area, swim in the rock pools nearby or just relax and appreciate the surroundings. After watching the sunset we will prepare dinner and have an early night in readiness for the day ahead.
Day 3Day 3
Day 3: After breakfast we hike further up the mountain to Chinzama Chalet. This walk is less steep than yesterday but also takes about 4hrs. We will stop by one of the rock pools for lunch and should arrive at the chalet by 3pm. As like the previous day, feel free to explore the area, swim in the rock pools nearby or just relax into the evening when you will be served dinner .
Day 4Day 4
Day 4: After breakfast we will head back down the mountain via the beautiful Minunu Pools. We should arrive at the base of the mountain by around 12pm and will spend the afternoon back at the Malawian Style guesthouse in Lujeri Tea Estate. The afternoon can be spent lounging by the swimming pool or venturing off to the rock pools nearby.
Day 5Day 5
Day 5: After breakfast we will head to Zomba Plateau. We will drive about 50km on tar road and then we will go via the back roads. The idea is for the group to ride about 61km on the dirt road along some stunning terrain alongside Mulanje Mountain, until we reach Phalombe town where we will stop for lunch, load up the bikes and drive the rest by car to Zomba Plateau.
Day 6Day 6
Day 6: After an early breakfast we will embark on a short bike ride around Zomba Plateau, past the Zomba Dam and up to William Waterfall. Upon return we will head to Liwonde National Park, which is probably the most popular game reserve in Malawi. Once we reach the turn off from the main road we will ride on bikes the 16km of dirt road through the villages to the entrance to the park, where Mvuu Camp will pick us up by boat and take us across to the other side of the river, where the Camp is situated. Upon arrival we will be shown to our chalets and given time to prepare for the evening sunset cruise along the river. Dinner will be served in the restaurant overlooking the river.
Day 7Day 7
Day 7: We will have an early morning game drive hoping to spot Liwonde’s major attraction, the Black Rhino, before heading to the stunning Cape Maclear, Lake Malawi. Again we will cycle the 16km of dirt road back to the main road, then drive approximately 100km to the Cape Maclear turnoff and then again cycle the 18km of dirt road to Cape Maclear. Here we will be based in the Lujeri Cottage for the first night, with the boat and watersports on offer.
Day 8Day 8
Day 8: Breakfast at the cottage followed by some morning water sports before we kayak our way out to Domwe Island. The camp on Domwe Island is situated in a beautiful bay – enjoy, chill out and relax for the rest of the day or feel free to explore the area!
Day 9Day 9
Day 9: Breakfast at the camp before we start making our way to the picturesque Mumbo Island. Once again enjoy the rest of the day at your own pace with snorkeling, kayaking and diving all available.
Day 10Day 10
Day 10: After breakfast we start making our way back to the cottage in Cape Maclear where we will spend our last night. Enjoy what the lake has to offer including leisurely swims to the island (Thumbe Island), snorkeling with the thousands of cichlids (over 800 unique to Lake Malawi), kayaking, shopping for curios in the village, water-skiing, tubing, wakeboarding, banana rides, fishing and sunset cruises while feeding the fish eagles, or visit some of the beach bars. The village has some great curios and African art and the locals LOVE old clothes as an exchange so bear this in mind.
